Weekend in the D

There’s never a shortage of events happening in Detroit. This weekend, here are five events Broderick Tower residents won’t want to miss.

The City of Detroit Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place Friday. Photo courtesy of Campus Martius Park.

Detroit Tree Lighting Ceremony at Campus Martius: The ninth annual Winter Magic Season kicks off this Friday, with activities starting as early as 11 a.m. The ceremony will feature plenty of holiday cheer including live entertainment, ice-skating, carriage rides, food trucks, a marketplace and a “cheer garden” featuring craft beers, holiday wines and warm winter cocktails. For information visit www.campusmartiuspark.org. Afterward, you can head over to the Cadillac Cafe at the Detroit Opera House for a post tree-lighting mixer and performances starting at 9 p.m.

D:hive Tree Lighting Bar Tour: Why not start your night out early and check out the Tree Lighting Bar Tour hosted by the folks at D:hive. The tour will stop at three bars near Detroit’s Campus Martius, and the affordable $5 ticket price includes your first well drink or domestic beer. The tour starts at 5:30 p.m. Get tickets here.

Holiday DLight: Starting to get anxious about that Christmas shopping you haven’t started? Not to worry, several retailers are setting up shop along Woodward Ave. for Holiday DLight: Made in Detroit. The stores will be open Thursday through Sunday through December 22. Shops opening their doors include Somerset CityLoft, Moosejaw, the Detroit Shoppe and many more. Visit this link for more information.

Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers: I’m sure many of us are excited to see the flock of fans donning Honolulu blue heading downtown this weekend for the Lions. It will be the first major sporting event since residents moved in. Broderick Tower residents have the option of enjoying pre-game festivities from the luxury (and warmth) of their apartment, or heading out to one of the many popular tailgating spots such as Eastern Market or Foxtown. Tickets for the game were still available as of this evening. www.detroitlions.com.

Detroit Derby Girls Season Opener: I have always wanted to see the Detroit Derby girls in action. These chicks are tough! Their season kicks off this Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Temple. There will be $2 beers until 7 p.m. and $5 Stoli specials all night. Sounds like a great way to spend an evening if I do say so myself! Get tickets for just $15 here.

What are your plans for this weekend? Anything else Broderick residents need to know about?
