Blumz Detroit offers tips for worry-free Valentine’s flowers

Valentine’s Day comes at the same time every year, but somehow it sure seems to sneak up on us doesn’t it? I had the chance to catch up with our downtown neighbors at Blumz by JRDesigns to talk about what it takes to have a worry-free Valentine’s Day when it comes to taking care of your floral needs.

Robbin Yelverton, co-owner at Blumz, offers the following tips for picking the perfect flowers for your Valentine:

Order early. Waiting to call in your order on the morning of Valentine’s Day doesn’t do anyone any favors. When you order and deliver early there is less opportunity for issues to arise. While Blumz can still accommodate last minute orders, early ordering minimizes chances something like an out-of-stock item, wrong address or expired credit card will prevent your flowers from getting to your sweetie. [Bonus: Blumz is offering a free $10 upgrade for orders placed by Feb. 8.]

Think outside the box. Most people think red roses when they think of Valentine’s Day. But according to the experts, many women would prefer something more colorful and a little less traditional. Blumz offers arrangements that include a wide range of colors and floral options such as roses, tulips, daisies, violets, asters and so much more. If you’re still seeing red when it comes to playing Cupid, Robbin suggests an arrangement of flowers with one red rose in the middle as a nice compromise.

Throw in some sweets…or beer. As beautiful as flowers are, they aren’t edible (usually). But don’t worry, Blumz has you covered with a variety of treats to add to your delivery such as scrumptious cheesecakes from Peteet’s Famous Cheesecakes, chocolates or a complete Made in Motown treat basket with all Detroit-made products. They even offer a “Gifts for Guys” section that boasts guy-friendly Valentine’s Day ideas such as this Beer for My Tulips arrangement. All you need to know about this one is that it includes a growler from Detroit Beer Company and duct tape. Yes, duct tape.

Changing water and trimming stems every 3-4 days can help extend the life of your Valentine’s Day flowers.

Take care of your flowers. According to Robbin, one of the most common complaints florists hear is that fresh flowers don’t last long enough. But did you know there are steps you can take to extend the life of your flowers? Make sure flowers are properly wrapped to protect them from the elements of Michigan winter while they’re in transit. Once you’re home, keep flowers away from direct heat or cold drafts. Robbin suggests changing the water and trimming the stems of your flowers every three to four days, which can help prevent bacteria and algae from building up. Also, make sure to use a clean container to hold your flowers and don’t forget to add the provided plant food.

Broderick residents, if you haven’t yet taken advantage of the $10 free flowers coupon from Blumz included in your welcome packet, this might be a good time to do so. Just remember, order early!
