The yoga classes at the new Come Play Detroit fitness studio are hosted by Pop Up Yoga 313. If you aren’t familiar, Pop Up Yoga is quite a cool concept focused on the idea of making yoga accessible to the masses on a pay-what-you-can basis.
Being rather new to yoga, I was a little apprehensive about the experience — especially the part about the room being heated to around 90 degrees. But the class was really quite pleasant and super relaxing. The heat wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be, and it adds to the already numerous health benefits of yoga by helping to improve circulation, flexibility and detoxification.
There were a few poses I couldn’t quite master such as the standing forward bend or that crazy handstand against the wall deal, but the instructor was very encouraging and made sure to show us modifications.
Here are some tips if you are planning on trying hot yoga:
- Dress comfortably. You’ll want to wear something that isn’t restricting – nothing too tight or too baggy. Consider wearing layers so you can adjust if you get too hot. Don’t forget your yoga mat! Though if you don’t have one there are a few to borrow.
- Don’t eat dinner right before. Most instructors suggest coming on an empty stomach so you don’t experience cramping or nausea, but drinking water before and after class is important.
- Arrive early. You’ll need to fill out some basic paperwork before your first class, so make sure you allow extra time. Plus, once class is in progress the front lobby door is locked (at this location).
- Bring cash. Pop Up Yoga encourages students to pay what they can afford, with a suggested donation of $10. Co-founder Beth James describes the concept in this Detroit News article saying, “Pay what you can. When can you pay more, we will be okay with that too. That’s the karma we can put out there because of the pop up idea.”
