Ryan Gosling sightings around metro Detroit seem hardly uncommon nowadays, but with recent news the Hollywood heartthrob made his way within one block of Broderick Tower to Cafe d’Mongo’s Speakeasy, I knew I had to check this place out.
Well known among its regulars but probably overlooked by most passersby, Cafe d’Mongo’s is tucked away along Griswold Street next to the Isaac Agree Synagogue and near the Come Play Detroit fitness studio.
Cafe d’Mongo’s is an eclectic speakeasy that serves up live music and authentic comfort foods, in addition to a full bar and excellent atmosphere. Chances are you’ll see owner Larry Mongo making his way from table to table, personally greeting customers.
Recently, the Friday dinner menu has consisted of barbeque chicken or ribs along with a whole slew of southern sides such as mac and cheese, black eyed peas and collard greens. On Saturday, Sloppy Larry’s (aka Sloppy Joe’s) are served. While it might not be the best place for those who like to have a lot of options, the food certainly did not disappoint.
Open only on Fridays and Saturdays, the cozy restaurant can fill up fast, so be sure to get there early. There’s not much space for large groups, but it’s great for a date night!
Be sure to top your dinner off with a “Detroit Brown” drink, made from Whiskey, Vernor’s and bitters. After one (or a few) of those signature cocktails, you can almost imagine the live band is actually Dead Man’s Bones…
Cafe d’Mongo’s is located at 1439 Griswold Street in Detroit, just one block south of Broderick Tower.
