When most people think of table tennis, a few things come to mind. Old rec rooms at the city center, that ping pong/pool table hybrid your parents now use to fold laundry on, or perhaps that movie Balls of Fury. But Drive, Detroit’s one and only table tennis social club, is working to change that perception.
Opened earlier this year, Drive combines table tennis with entertainment and elegance. Guests are greeted by a sleek and sophisticated style, complete with white leather couches, mood lighting and eye-catching art deco surrounding several professional table tennis courts.
Players of all skill levels are welcomed, and staff will help you navigate the rules and techniques if you need a refresher course. You can reserve courts by the hour, $10 per hour before 5pm and $15 per hour after 5pm for non-members. Those who are club members can play for free and also can take advantage of special league challenges and VIP events.
Drive also offers several special public events and promotions including FREE play on Monday evenings during the summer, and a Lunch League. In addition, this Friday, July 19 from 5pm to 11pm, Drive will host a special “beer + pong” event featuring free samples from Motor City Brewing Works.
Our group had a blast getting out on the courts. Though I’m no Forrest Gump, it was still a fun and unique way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I highly recommend grabbing a group of friends and heading over to Drive.
